Status Orange Wind Warning as Storm Ellen approaches Galway

Met Éireann have issued an Orange wind warning for Galway from 21.00 on Wednesday, 19th August 2020 to 06.00 on Thursday, 20th August 2020.

Storm Ellen will track over Ireland this evening and tonight bringing severe and damaging winds. Heavy rainfall and storm surge will result in some flooding.

Galway County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team met this morning to discuss the potential impact of the storm.

Storm Ellen is an unusual weather event for this time of year and the key message is for people to stay safe.

With trees in full leaf impacts could be significant with damaging winds, heavy rain, and large waves along the coast. Due to strong winds overland, high, potentially dangerous, waves can occur on lakes as well as along coasts and over high ground.

There is a high risk of flying debris, fallen trees and powerlines. The public are requested to ensure that garden furniture, bins, and other objects in their gardens and around their properties are secure.

The public are advised to avoid coastal routes, to make alternative route plans where possible and to avoid making unnecessary journeys. Members of the public should not visit coastal areas to view the storm conditions as this is considered extremely dangerous.

The public are also advised to avoid camping due to the storm conditions and make alternative arrangements for the duration of Storm Ellen.

Please take precautions to stay safe and the public are reminded to make contact with elderly or vulnerable neighbours and provide assistance and support to tourists and those enjoying a staycation in Galway County during Storm Ellen.

The Galway County Council Severe Weather Advisory Team will continue to monitor these current weather conditions as they change throughout this storm event.
