Sinn Féin Galway West TD, Mairéad Farrell, has written to the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan, regarding concerns about the ongoing suspension of "essential bus services" in Galway.
The four routes operated by the City Direct Bus company, which servicing up to 30,000 people in the areas of Knocknacarra, Barna, and Salthill, have been suspended since March 23. As yet there is no clarity on when the operator will resume service.
.
On its website, City Direct posted a statement on July 1: "With lockdown measures easing we understand there is increased demand for resuming our service. Unfortunately, at this time we do not have additional information on the start date. As soon as we have more updates we will post it here and on our Facebook Page. Thank you for understanding and we apologise for any inconvenience caused."
In her letter to the Minister, Dep Farrell urged him to "take immediate action". She wrote: "With schools, colleges, and businesses reopening, many of the residents who relied on these services have been left with no viable means of transportation." As a result she has called on the Minister to make provisions to extend Bus Eireann services to cover the routes.
