State-of-the-art STEM building at GMIT to go to tender next year

STEM building will face Ballybane Road and include research labs, seminar rooms, classrooms, and lecture theatres

The construction of a state-of-the-art science, technology, engineering, and maths building at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology is set to go to tender early next year.

The project received the go-ahead on Tuesday as part of a Government initiative aimed at creating space for 8,000 additional students in 11 institutions across the State.

The new STEM building at GMIT will be located on the eastern side of the Galway campus facing the Ballybane Road, and will include research labs, seminar rooms, classrooms, and lecture theatres. There will also be a focus on practice-based learning and flexibility to adapt to changing teaching and learning needs, including hybrid and remote learning.

Fine Gael Galway West TD, and Minister of State for International and Road Transport Logistics, Hildegarde Naughton said it would be "a massive boost for GMIT and the broader region".

“STEM disciplines are an area of significant growth in our education system and in our economy, and this development will place GMIT to the fore in attracting students in those fields,” she said. “It’s part of a very ambitious programme of investment in the higher education sector by this Government. With a rapidly changing global economic landscape, it’s also never been more important to be ready to adapt to the opportunities and challenges that arise. Our higher education sector is central to that."
