Road access to Silverstrand will remain closed to vehicles until at least next Monday due to large volumes of traffic using the road, and the car park at the beach reaching full capacity
The decision which was taken late on Tuesday evening, will see private vehicles prohibited from accessing the beach, however, access remains available to pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency vehicles.
A spokesperson for the Galway City Council said the block would be reviewed on Monday.
The closure of the beach to vehicles follows on from the decision by the water safety officer in consultation with city officials to close Blackrock Diving Tower on Tuesday morning due to concerns over social distancing.
The diving tower has subsequently been reopened, however, a spokesperson for the city's local authority said the council will continue to monitor crowds on a daily basis and will temporarily block access if the situation is deemed unsafe.
The spokesperson also added that the same protocol would be followed for all public amenities in the city.
