Work started this week on a new bus shelter on Michael Collins Road in Mervue, at the bus stop across from the Medtronic - formerly Covidien - plant.
Construction of a new shelter has come after a "lengthy campaign", according to Independent Galway City East councillor, Terry O'Flaherty.
'In Galway it rains a lot of the time and it’s no fun having to stand in the open, getting drenched while waiting for a bus to come'
"Many times down the years I’ve seen people from the Mervue area as well as Medtronic employees standing out in the pouring rain waiting for a bus,” she said. "Locals and the Medtronic HR Department have made representations to me to secure a shelter for the bus stop there, so this is a win win situation for both groups."
Cllr O’Flaherty said that the provision of shelters was "important in ensuring more people used public transport". She said: “If we want to get people to take the bus, then we need to make the experience as comfortable as possible. In Galway it rains a lot of the time and it’s no fun having to stand in the open, getting drenched while waiting for a bus to come."
