THEATRE DIRECTORS Sarah Baxter and Emily Foran have been chosen as this year's recipients of Druid's Marie Mullen Bursary for Female Artists.
Sarah and Emily will be assistant directors on productions for Druids 2020/2021 season. They will both receive a stipend of €2,000 each along with mentoring, access to workshops, and Druid’s other development programmes such as FUEL and the Druid Debuts.

Sarah Baxter graduated from London International School of Performing Arts. She is currently a member of Irish National Opera’s artist development programme, ABL Aviation Opera Studio. Her recent work as a director includes The Roaring Banshees (Watergate Theatre & Smock Alley Theatre ); These Stupid Things, Personal Space Vol II, Vehicle, and It’s Getting Harder and Harder for Me (Smock Alley Theatre ).

Emily Foran graduated from Queen's University Belfast with a BA in Drama and from The Lir, National Academy of Dramatic Art, Dublin with a MA in Fine Arts in Theatre Directing. Her recent work as a director includes: New Speak: Reimagined, The Right Twig Showcase (Lyric Theatre, Belfast ); Legs Wide Shut (Smock Alley Theatre ).

Now in its third year, the award is intended to address the historic imbalance of female representation in theatre and to support the professional development of women in Irish theatre. This year it has been expanded to include two recipients.
"These uncertain times can be very isolating for freelance artists who need to return to a safe and creative space urgently," said Druid artistic director, Garry Hynes. "In response, we’ve made the decision to expand the Druid Debuts series and the Marie Mullen Bursary. We look forward to working with Emily and Sarah over the coming months as we get ready to return to live theatre."
