Enhanced cycling infrastructure is planned for Bothar Stiofáin, Bishop O'Donnell Road, and Threadneedle Road, under a new plan by the Galway City Council.
At Monday’s city council meeting, councillors received a presentation on the development of the Galway Cycle Network. It is envisaged as a two stage development, with phase one concentrating on the east side of the city, and phase two concentrating on the west.
The overall aim of the project is to provide improvements to cycling priority and safety, through changes to the road space on a number of roads, including Bothar Stiofáin, Bishop O'Donnell Road, and Threadneedle Road, and to increase priority for cyclists and pedestrians.

The council will be completing the preliminary design on the proposals over the coming weeks, and there will be public consultation on this in the autumn. The planning process for the proposals is expected to start before the end of the year.

The proposals have been welcomed by Fianna Fáil Galway City West councillor, John Connolly, who has called it "a positive step in the development of cycling infrastructure". He also welcomed the planned public consultation "where all stakeholders can have their say on the design of the infrastructure".
Cllr Connolly also pointed out that the proposal for the temporary cycle lane along Salthill Promenade is not included in this plan. "That proposal has come through the City Mobility team that was initiated on foot of the Covid crisis," he said, although he expressed doubts that "a proposal of such magnitude can be implemented safely on a temporary basis".
