Irish Water has resumed work on replacing old and damaged water pipes in the Mervue area. Work on the leaking pipes began in January but were suspended during the Lockdown.
The work is being carried out along St James’ Crescent, from Bayview Heights to Quinn Terrace, and will involve the replacement of 1.2 kilometres of watermain with high density polyethylene pipes. It will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to property boundaries and connecting it to the households water supply.
Dave Murphy of Irish Water, said the work would be limited to short sections to minimise impact on the public. Traffic management might be in place during this time, but local and emergency traffic would be maintained at all times. The project is due to be fully complete in mid-July.
The news has been welcomed by Independent Galway City East councillor, Terry O'Flaherty. “I’m delighted work has now resumed," she said, "and that the reduced levels of leakage will result in people in the area getting a more secure and reliable source of drinking water."
