Renowned Irish actor Gabriel Byrne has appealed for support for Galway Hospice afterits fundraising was decimated by the cancellation of annual collections.
Fundraising for Galway Hospice has been impacted by Covid-19 and meant the cancellation of major events including the annual Hospice Sunflower Days collections on June 5-6.
“It is an extraordinary tribute to the unfailing generosity of the people of Galway over the years that the Galway Hospice has survived,” said Mr Byrne. “It is also remarkable that Hospice services have been provided free of charge since the charity first began providing palliative care to the community 30 years ago, in January 1990.
“Even amid the pandemic crisis, the Galway Hospice continues to care for patients and families living with life-limiting illness, as well as its ‘Hospice at Home’ and bereavement counselling programmes.
“This not-for-profit charity has always relied on public funds to carry out its mission. However, Covid-19 has meant fundraising events have been postponed or cancelled.
“So to put it simply your help is needed now more than ever to continue its crucial and indispensable work.
“Everyone irrespective of who they are or why they are ill is deserving of compassion and empathy at the end of life’s journey.
“No one should die alone or in avoidable pain or suffering. Please give what you can however small to ensure Galway Hospice will continue to be here for you and your loved ones,” said Mr Byrne.
