Visit your virtual museum for a world of wonder

Galway City Museum may be currently closed to the public but it is very much open online. Visit your virtual museum at www.galwaycitymuseum.ie where you can access many educational resources and explore the exhibitions and the collection from the comfort of your own home.

The museum has added some brand new material for visitors to enjoy. In addition to browsing past and current exhibitions, you can listen in and watch museum podcasts and vodcasts.

‘MY TREASURED OBJECTS’What is the first thing you would grab to save in an emergency? The museum team are interested in hearing all about it, its background story and what feelings or memories it evokes. All you have to do is send us a photograph and a paragraph that tells us about your most treasured object to [email protected] using the hashtag, #mytreasuredobject. Check out museum staff member’s picks on the museum website and social media to get the ball rolling.

‘MY COVID CREATIVITY’ What have you been doing since the Covid 19 lockdown period started? Have you been using your initiative and creativity to make the long days at home seem a little shorter and a lot more fun? Galway City Museum wants to document this creativity and capture the experience of Galway people during the 2020 pandemic. They want to develop an exhibition based on this strange period in the future. Children and adults alike are called on to let Galway City Museum know what you have been up to! Send your photos, drawings or videos showing what you have baked/made/designed/planted and what has entertained you during these past weeks (this might include something as mundane as digging the garden ).Please send images with a 50 word description, your name and the area you live in to [email protected] with the subject heading #mycovidcreativity or post to our Facebook and Instagram.

GUESS WHAT and EXPLORING SEA SCIENCE

Tune into Galway City Museum’s social media every Monday for GUESS WHAT, a game full of fun and intrigue. While schools are closed, their popular EXPLORING SEA SCIENCE Gallery, (in collaboration with the Marine Institute ) is now online as a live resource for the first time ever!

Explore their beautiful and precious marine environment and learn all sorts of new marine facts .The team at Galway City Museum are thrilled with the huge response to their newly refurbished virtual museum service. “It is great to see the momentum gathering day by day and the positivity that is being generated out of a crisis”, said Eithne Verling, Museum Director.
