Lyons demands gardaí be more proactive in fining cyclists on the Prom

Councillor calls on City Hall to erect more signage to highlight illegality on cycling on footpaths

Despite fewer cars on the roads than ever before, the problem of people cycling on Salthill Promenade persists, an activity which is against the law and which also makes social distancing difficult.

This is the view of Independent Galway City West councillor Donal Lyons, who has called on the Galway City Council to erect signage on the Promenade, at both ground level and at eye level, to "highlight that cycling is prohibited on the Prom".

'Despite the fact that Fixed Charge Notices can be issued, cyclists are continuing to flout the law'

Cllr Lyons, along with other Galway City West councillors, have received verbal and written representations on this issue. "It is now dangerous to walk on the Prom with cyclists coming either towards you or worse coming at you from behind," said Cllr Lyons, quoting correspondence from one constituent. "Recently I saw a cyclist come flying around the corner down towards Blackrock swimming area from the Prom and almost hit another woman. The cyclist had no regard for anyone’s safety. The prom is no place for a cyclist."

Cllr Lyons has also called on the Salthill Gardaí Station to be "more proactive" on the issue. "Despite the fact that Fixed Charge Notices can be issued," he said, "cyclists are continuing to flout the law."
