Can you See the Wood for the Trees?

There are days when everyone experiences that sense of overwhelm, of not being able to have clarity for what needs to be done. But by taking a step back from the chaos, whether through mindfulness, meditation or other activity we can get back the perspective we need to work through difficult times.

This is the sentiment being explored in the latest exhibition by Art in Mind entitled “Wood for the Trees”. Art in Mind are a non-profit organisation offering workshops in wire sculpture to demonstrate the benefits that a mindful, creative practice can have on mental wellbeing. Founder and sculptor Glenn Gibson discovered this first-hand in his own practice and through Art in Mind is teaching people wire sculpture as a means to deal with trials of the everyday. Creativity requires you to concentrate fully on the task at hand, giving your mind a chance to reset.

For this exhibition Glenn is joined by fellow artists and co-founders, Ronan Fahey and Elaine Naughton, as well Luke Goodall, Sabina Ñiguez, Catherine Fleming, Conor Malone & Laney Mannion. Also on display is a collaboration piece created with the 5th art students from Coláiste Bhaile Chláir, This collaboration is what Art in Mind is all about. The project involved Glenn demonstrating and teaching the students a mindful approach to creating a sculpture. They each created a small tree and these individual pieces were then merged to form a very impressive, large tree and root system which will be installed and permanently displayed in their school, symbolising the core values of the school and reflecting the school crest.

“Wood for the Trees” opens in the Town Hall theatre on Friday 6th March @ 5:30pm with special guest Galway City councillor and professional psychotherapist Cllr. Clodagh Higgins, is curated by Margaret Nolan and runs until 8th April.
