The Scotsman who cycled the world

Cyclist Mark Beaumont to talk about his epic, record breaking, journey around the world

IT TOOK Phileas Fogg 79 days to journey around the world in Jules Verne's celebrated novel, but British cyclist Mark Beaumont went one better, making that epic trek in just over 78 days.

Mark Beaumont, the British long-distance cyclist, broadcaster, and author, who holds the record for cycling round the world, is coming to the Town Hall Theatre on Sunday February 23 at 8pm to present his show, Around The World In 80 Days.

Having already smashed the circumnavigation cycling World Record twice in his career, and inspired by Verne's novel, Beaumont wanted to make this Victorian fiction a two wheeled reality. He did so, achieving a record in completing the 18,000 mile journey on September 18 2017, a total of 78 days and 14 hours, averaging 240 miles a day. In Galway he will talk about that cycle, as well as show film footage and photographs.
