Galway do enough to win camogie league opener

Galway started their defence of their Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League division one with a victory, overcoming Dublin by 0-10 to 0-7 at TU Blanchardstown.

With Galway looking a little rusty, scores proved hard to come by, but they led by three heading into the second quarter. Points from Rebecca Hennelly (two ), Caitriona Cormican and goalkeeper Sarah Healy from a long-distance free, gave Galway the edge.

Dublin, however, finished the half strongly. A couple of points from Sinéad Wylde kept them in touch at the interval as they trailed by just two, 0-5 to 0-3.

They then cut the deficit to the single point on two occsions in the second half, but the All Ireland champions always had the edge.

Martha Donoghue split the posts soon after the resumption, while Carrie Dolan and Niamh Kilkenny stretched the gap to three. However Wylde and Kerrie Finnegan got it back to the minimum again with 40 minutes elapsed.

In the end, however, Cathal Murray’s side did enough with Healy landing her second monster point and Hennelly converting two frees.
