SRUTH NA Teanga, the new show from Branar Téatar do Pháistí, which aims to "re-ignite a sense of wonder and a sense of pride" in the Irish language, receives its world premiere in March as part of Galway 2020.
Sruth na Teanga, commissioned by Galway 2020, and devised and directed by Marc MacLochlainn, will be performed at the Galway Airport Terminal Building, Carnmore, from March 2 to 29.
One of the first major events of the city and county’s 2020 programme, Sruth na Teanga will be an immersive, site-specific, theatre event that will trace the evolution and life of the Irish language, the story of the Irish culture, and the attitude of Irish people to it.
“We are so excited to create an extraordinary theatre experience, which we hope will unleash the power of curiosity, empathy, and imagination," said Marc MacLochlainn, "to bring audiences on a journey that allows them to re-ignite a sense of wonder and a sense of pride in our native language, in Gaeilge, which has carried and shaped our culture through the millennia.”
The Galway Airport terminal is currently being "re-purposed and re-animated" as the "gateway" for the event, which will see groups of 30 enter at a time, travelling through five different "worlds", which will range from the ancient stories of the Fianna to the technological and digital 21st century. There will be puppetry, music, video mapping, and live performance.
The cast is Helen Gregg, Grace Kiely, Tara Breathnach, Catherine Denning, Zita Monaghan, and Ionia Ní Chróinín. There will be music by Michael Chang and costume design by Elaine Mears.
The show is suitable for ages 8+. Tickets are available from the Town Hall Theatre (091 - 569777, www.tht.ie ); tickets for schools are via www.branar.ie See also www.sruthnateanga.ie
