GAAW to hold vigil marking the link between militarism and climate change

Event to take place at junction of Shop Street/Mainguard Street

Galway Alliance Against War will mark Global Climate Action Day with a vigil at the junction of Shop Street/Mainguard Street tomorrow from 12.30 to 1.30pm, marking the link between militarism and climate change.

The Galway peace group believes the issue of war and climate change has been simply ignored. “In 2018 more than $1.8 trillion was squandered on weaponry," said GAAW spokesperson Niall Farrell. "The EU has embraced militarism with gusto. Between 2004 and 2006 it spent €65 million on the military, but for 2014 to 2020 it will have jumped to an enormous €6,585 million."

Mr Farrell says it is time to prioritise "the glaring link" between the industrial military complex, warfare and climate disaster, environmental damage and forced migration. "We will be on the streets of Galway, rain or shine," he said. "We can no longer allow our governments ignore - and even worse - empower - the war industries that are destroying people and our planet for profit.”
