Galway clubs fall short

Not a good weekend for Galway basketball teams.

Maree women, having enjoyed a 12-month winning run, ended up on the wrong side of a 70-76 scorline in Oranmore, while the men lost 77-61 away to Belfast Star.

Maree had enjoyed the perfect start to their first season in the women's top flight with a home win against Glanmire and then a first win on the road Cork side Brunell, but on Saturday evening they came up against reigning league and cup champions Liffey Celtics, who claimed the win.

It was a tight match all the way, with the champions edging the opening quarter by 24-21, and it remained close throughout with the Dubliners taking the spoils to record their second victory of the season.

In the men’s Super League action UCD Marian edged Moycullen 79-73 in Dublin, with Mike Garrow leading the scoring for the hosts with 25 points, while Belfast Star secured their second win of the season with a 77-61 victory over Maree.
