Galway WFC look to seal national double in Saturday's league decider

It is a huge occasion for Galway Women’s FC Under 17s on Saturday when they host Wexford Youths in the Só Hotels Women’s National League final in Eamonn Deacy Park (5pm ).

The Galway girls, who recently were crowned U17 League Cup champions after a 2-1 win over Peamount United, will now be hoping to to pull off a rare seasonal double.

The team continued their momentum last weekend when overcoming Sligo Rovers 2-0 in the semi-final, having dominated the opening half.

They went into the break with a two-goal cushion - the opening goal arriving on 16 minutes after a Ciara McManus shot was well saved by Rovers ‘keeper Farah McDonagh, but the rebound fell to the feet of in-form striker Kellie Brennan who made no mistake from six yards.

The second came on the stroke of half-time when a Shauna Brennan cross from the left found Anna Fahey. McDonagh did well to block Fahey’s first-time volley, but the Galway girl made no mistake with the follow up, rocketing a shot to the top right corner.

The break appeared to upset the home side's rhythm as Sligo came more into the game in the second half, and denied Galway’s up-front threat admirably. However, while both sides went close, neither could get on the scoresheet in the half.

In the other semi-final Wexford Youths travelled to Cork City and came away 1-0 winners, with the only goal coming from Irish international Blessing Kingsley.

When the sides last met, they served up a six-goal thrillers with Galway winning 4-2, and the home crowd will be more than happy with a similar result on Saturday.
