Unfortunately, it is coming into the time of year where we must start thinking seriously about keeping our home warm for the winter. There is nothing worse than sitting in the cold and it is important we use the most economical fuel available to keep heating costs down over the cold period. The reality is that Ireland, unfortunately, gets cold in the winter and fuel is big business.
Nowadays there are many types of central heating systems, including gas, electricity, oil, and solar powered systems. However, most people also have an open fire or range to supplement the heating. If this unit is solid fuel, you will need wood, turf, briquettes, or coal to get you through the winter.
But we all like to save a few cents and here are some top tips for saving money and fuel in the build-up to winter.
1. Insulation
When that cool draught starts to come into your home, it is time to insulate. Make sure your blinds and curtains are fit for the task as they will reduce the loss of heat. A draught excluder for the cracks at the bottom of your door will aid you in your efforts. Making these efforts will not only stop you getting cold but help you reduce your energy bill.
2. Turn off appliances
It might seem like an obvious tip but how many times do you walk away from the dishwater and washing machine when they are still powered on? These appliances use most of their energy for water heating and running them on a lower temperature setting will help save on energy costs. Also if you are looking to just freshen up clothes, run them on a lower temperature of 30°C.
3. Keep your fridge shut
A fridge's best performing temperature is estimated to be between 2 and 3°C. This keeps food safe to eat and avoids dreaded freezing. Also, don't forget to shut the fridge's door because for every 10 to 20 seconds the door is left open, it takes 45 minutes to cool down to its original temperature.
4. Batch cook
Now it may not be the most convenient at times but batch cooking food saves time and energy, especially if you have a busy lifestyle. When cooking on the hob, don't let heat escape, cover pots and pans with lids. This keeps heat in and reduces condensation in the kitchen.
5. Use your curtains
Heat from the sun is free so when the sun is shining open your curtains and let the sunlight and heat into your home. When it gets dark, close the curtains and they will act as another form of insulation.
6. Move your sofa
It may feel like a great idea to have your sofa in front of the radiator but the couch is absorbing all the heat. Move it away so the hot air can circulate around the room. The same goes for drying clothes on the radiator.
So there you have it. A few tips to save a few cents this winter and conserve your fuel for when it is needed most.
