Funding of more than €683,000 has been allocated to the Irish language organisation, Glór na nGael for 2019 to 2022 in order to develop the Joe McDonagh Foundation and support the Teanga Tí/Family Language Scheme.
The allocation was approved by Aire don Ghaeilge, don Ghaeltacht, agus do na hOileáin, Seán Kyne. The Joe McDonagh Foundation/Fondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha - named in memory of Galway hurling great, former GAA president, and Irish language supporter, Joe McDonagh - encourages the use of the language in GAA clubs through language classes, social events, training, and on social media and websites. To date, 128 clubs are participating, including six Galway clubs and nine Mayo clubs.
The Teanga Tí/Family Language Scheme operates in partnership with 15 Gaelscoileanna, including Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh in Knocknacarra, to support households where Irish is the main language of the home.
“These schemes support the use of Irish both outside of the education system and outside of traditional Gaeltacht areas," said Minister Kyne. "I am delighted to be able to approve this funding to help further develop the schemes over the next four years.”
