Met Éireann have issued an orange weather warning for Galway and this will remain in place from 6pm Thursday to 3am Friday (subject to updates ).
The affects of Storm Lorenzo will begin to be felt from Thursday morning to Friday morning. The main impacts will include disruptive winds, falling trees and flooding.
In coastal areas Storm Lorenzo will produce significant swell, high waves and sizeable storm surges. This will lead to wave overtopping, some coastal flooding and damage, especially along the coast. River levels are currently elevated across the County and the rainfall may lead to river flooding.
The Council is making sand bags available for collection by those whose properties are in vulnerable areas:
Gort/Kinvara - Sandbags have been distributed to the Square in Kinvara, a further number of filled sandbags will be delivered and left in the Square for use by those in properties which may be exposed to flooding. If any more sandbags are required please contact the Council office in Gort 091 509065.
Oranmore/ Clarenbridge - Sandbags are available in the Council depot in Tonroe, Clarinbridge. There is a further supply of sandbags and sand at this location.
Leenane/Roundstone/Oughterard - Sandbags are available for distribution locally, please contact the Clifden area office 091 509095
Galway County Council Crisis Management Team are meeting daily to monitor these current weather conditions.
The key message is for people to stay safe during this weather event. Driving conditions may be hazardous and drivers need to take care and be conscious of cyclists and pedestrians. Flying debris, fallen trees and powerlines are a risk. Motorists are asked to avoid coastal routes, to make alternative route plans where possible and avoid making unnecessary journeys.
Members of the public are advised not visit coastal areas to view the storm conditions as this is considered extremely dangerous.
