The astro-turf facility at Cappagh Park will be getting floodlights next year, which will allow the facility to stay open into the late evening. The news was described as “very positive” by one councillor.
At Monday’s city council meeting, councillors were informed that floodlights will be erected at the astro-turf facility at Cappagh Park. Tender documents have been prepared, a company to carry out the work is to be chosen, and works will begin in early 2020. It will be fully funded by the council and will not depend on funding from the Capital Sports Grants.
The news has been welcomed by Fianna Fail Galway City West councillor Peter Keane, who said the floodlights will increase use of the facility by up to 50 per cent. “We have a situation where the astro-facility is redundant after night fall,” he said. “The provision of floodlights can only be a positive step for the community at large.
“It is imperative we keep children at exercise right up to bedtime and this facility will deliver on this end. Galway City Council has shown its commitment to the community of Knocknacarra and I am certain this will meet with universal approval within City Hall and beyond.”
