Nominate a Galwegian for Volunteer of the Year awards

Galway Volunteer Centre is calling on the public to “help recognise kindness in our communities” by nominating a volunteer for the national Volunteer Ireland Awards.

Nominations are open until October 4. According to Galway Volunteer centre manager, Donncha Foley, “Volunteers are the lifeblood of Irish society and we are proud to have a strong culture of volunteering in Galway. Without them, many of the things we take for granted simply wouldn’t exist. It’s hard to think of an area that doesn’t benefit from volunteers - from healthcare to sport, supporting vulnerable people or protecting our environment, but they are unsung heroes, and with these awards we want to shine a light on the amazing people who give so much to Galway without any expectation of thanks or glory.”

Alongside the overall Ireland’s Volunteer of the Year award, volunteers will be recognised in 10 other categories. Every person nominated – whether shortlisted for an award or not – will receive a ‘thank you’ card from Volunteer Ireland.

The nominations will be whittled down to a shortlist of 30 who will be invited, with their family and friends, to an awards ceremony in Dublin in December. Nominations can be made online at www.volunteer.ie
