Basketball set for season with Donie Greene tournament

The traditional curtain-raiser for the Men’s Superleague basketball season takes place in Oranmore this weekend with the third annual staging of the Donie Greene Memorial Tournament.

The tournament, which will be played on a round robin format, is hosted by Maree Basketball Club in memory of former player Donie Greene, and tips off in Calasanctius College in Oranmore on Saturday morning with a Galway derby.

Moycullen Basketball Club has been ever present in the tournament, and once again will lock horns with the host club to open proceedings at 10am. Dublin sides Killester and Eanna are also taking part this year, and meet in the second game at 11.30am, while Ballincollig BC from Cork make up the roster of teams, and will play their first game at 1pm against Moycullen. Maree and Killester meet at 2.30pm, while Eanna take on Ballincollig at 4pm in the final game of the day.

Action on Sunday gets under way at 9am with the meeting of Moycullen and Killester, followed by games between Maree and Eanna (10.30am ), Ballincollig v Killester (noon ), Eanna v Moycullen (1.30pm ), and Maree v Ballincollig (3pm ). Games will be played over eight-minute quarters.

Maree and Moycullen will meet again the following Saturday, this time in the Kingfisher Gym in NUIG on the first weekend of the Superleague season. Maree BC’s women’s side are also playing Superleague this season, and will begin their campaign the following week when they welcome Glanmire to Oranmore (Saturday September 28, 5pm ).

NUIG Mystics are away to Limerick Celtics for their first game of their Women’s division one season on Friday September 27, while Titans have withdrawn from the National League this season, having played in the men’s division one for the last number of years.
