Salthill football continues impressive run

The group stage of the Galway club championship came to a close last weekend with some thrilling games.

In group A Salthill continued their impressive championship run with a fourth win when defeating Milltown in Tuam Stadium on a scoreline of 2-14 to 3-9.

This two-point defeat also secured Milltown their senior status for 2020 after St Michael's defeated Killererin 3-15 to 0-11, staying safe on a -11 score difference compared to Killererin’s -13.

An Spidéal defeated Bearna 0-13 to 0-11, gaining qualification to the quarter-final, thanks to their superior score difference over Killanin.

This leaves Killererin and Bearna in the relegation play-off, while Salthill, An Spidéal and St Michael's progress.

Group B was much more straightforward. Annaghdown’s win over St James leaves the Jimmies in the relegation play-off, while, after a disappointing season, Annaghdown have guaranteed themselves senior football for 2020.

Tuam Stars’ impressive 2019 continues after a win over Claregalway left them on second place of group B.

While Claregalway still qualify in third place, they will play a team that finished top of group A or C.

Corofin’s facile win over Leitir Mór continues their 41 game unbeaten run in Galway and ends a poor showing in the group stages for Leitir Mór.

Group B sees Corofin, Tuam Stars and Claregalway advance with St James and Leitir Mor in the relegation play-offs.

Killanin’s 1-13 to 0-13 win over Monivea/Abbey lifted them to third place in group A, but they were edged out by An Spidéal for a quarter-final berth, while Moycullen and Mountbellew/Moylough both recorded easy victories to confirm qualification.

This leaves An Cheathrú Rua and Caherlistrane in the relegation play-off.

Quarter final draw: Games to be played on the weekend of 21/22 September, Corofin v Mountbellew/Moylough; Salthill Knocknacarra v Claregalway; An Spidéal v Tuam Stars; St Michaels’s v Moycullen; Relegation play-off, An Cheathrú Rua v Leitir Mór; Killererin v Caherlistrane; St James v Bearna.
