Galway Technical Institute, is the largest college of further education and training in the west of Ireland. It is now accepting applications for courses commencing this September. Through its applied learning approach, GTI offers learners the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the workplace as well as with providing the knowledge and skills to progress to further and third level education. Courses at GTI can provide a direct route to third level with approximately 60 per cent of students being offered a place in colleges such as NUIG, UCD, GMIT, AIT, LIT, and IT Sligo. One student without a Leaving Certificate qualification secured a place in law at UCD through her QQI Level 5 award in legal studies.
Another student is studying psychology in NUIG after completing the QQI Level 5 emergency care services course.
One of GTI's many mature students gained employment with a care agency after reskilling and completing the QQI Level 5 health service skills course, and three others obtained permanent positions within the HSE.
One of the ITEC/CIBTAC/QQI beauty therapy students completed the two-year beauty course and is starting an exciting career with Steiner Cruise Ships.
Skills for the economy is a particular focus at GTI and courses are tailored towards the jobs market. GTI has established work placement links with a number of partner colleges in Europe through its ongoing successful Erasmus+ projects. Partner countries include Portugal, Poland, Turkey, Spain, France, Finland, and Scotland. These work placements are fully funded by the EU and offer students an opportunity to develop their cultural and educational expertise while also completing a work placement in their vocational area. Last year, GTI sent 90 learners to Europe as part of its successful Erasmus+ initiative.
