Mayor Mike Cubbard won his election campaign earlier this summer with a green pledge to avoid the use of posters and to help the environment.
Now, his latest initiative is set to get the blood pumping through our veins, to boost healthy living, and to encourage people to come out, meet each other, walk and talk about the issues that affect them in their community.
Mayor Cubbard hopes that at the completion of the initiative, he will have an unprecedented view of how the city’s residents see the city and the immediate area in which they live.
“Starting in mid September, I will walk 100 miles in 100 days in a bid to visit every community, walk every street and listen to the collective concerns of the people of Galway City,” he told the Advertiser last evening.
“There are a number of reasons for this initiative with the ultimate goal to have residents and community groups come together and form new relationships which can only make our city stronger,” he said, adding that he is issuing a general invite to everyone to get involved and to join him on his walks for wisdom around different areas of the city.
“I am currently putting together a schedule that will include all areas throughout Galway City over 100 days and I encourage community groups, sports clubs, residents’ associations, community leaders, and individuals to register their interest in joining me for a mile in their area by emailing [email protected].
“This is a great opportunity to promote a healthier Galway, to promote positive mental well being and to reconnect within our communities therefore I encourage everyone to get involved.
“As we walk, it will also give me an opportunity as Mayor, to discuss local issues and concerns with residents and community leaders throughout Galway City.
“I will also be inviting elected members, officials, community Gardaí and motivational speakers to participate over the course of the 100 days therefore don’t delay and sign up today .
Just send your name and area to [email protected] and you’ll be notified when A Mile With Mayor Mike is in your area. Together let’s make Galway a healthier city,” he said.
