•Golf: Galway's Ronan Mallarney continues to lead the field at the AIG Irish Amateur Close Championship at Ballybunnion. The 23-years-old will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Irish professionals Shane Lowry, Rory McIllroy, Graeme McDowell, Peter Lawrie, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley. Another Galway youngster, Devin Morley from Oughterard is currently lying in seventh place after the two rounds on 142.
•Soccer: Underage soccer tournament, the Galway Cup, gets under way in Drom tomorrow morning. Now in its 15th year, the tournament involves international, regional and club teams competing in five sections, 2007 Boys, 2006 Club, 2006 Elite and 2004 Premier, and 2004 Girls. •Basketball: Maree's Dayna Finn has been playing a key role in Ireland's U20 women's basketball exploits at the 2019 FIBA U20 Women’s European Championship division B in Kosovo. The Maree and NUIG player contributed a team-high 18 points in Ireland's resounding 72-58 win over Great Britain, helped by Maree teammate Alison Blaney and NUIG's Maggie Byrne. The game against Britain was always going to be a tough test, but the Irish were relentless from the start, with Dayna Finn driving the team forward from the off, finishing out the first half with 17 points and five rebounds to see Ireland into a 42-26 point lead at the break. She went on to finish with 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal in a fantastic display. The Ireland Under 18 men, captained by Moycullen clubman and St Paul's Oughterard student Paul Kelly finished in 16th place from 24 teams at the 2019 FIBA U18 Men’s European Championship Division B in Romania, following a 91-66 point loss to Hungary in their final classification game.
• Soccer: Former Galway United goalkeeper David Forde has hung up his boots after a successful career in England. The 39-years-old Galwegian, saw out his long career at Cambridge United, after a long spell with Millwall. Forde made his Ireland debut at the age of 33 against Sweden in 2013 and made his last appearance in 2016.
•European Team Games: Talented Nicole Walsh of Galway City Harriers has been selected for this weekend’s European Team Championships as part of the 4x400m relay squad. This will be Walsh’s first cap for Ireland and comes on the back of a brilliant season to date, capped by her national senior bronze medal over 400m recently. The championships will be held from August 9 to 11 in Norway.
