A weekend with Two Door Cinema Club and Orbital

Two concerts in the Big Top for the Galway International Arts Festival

DO YOU like your music indie based, guitar driven, and with funk grooves and pop hooks aplenty? Or do you prefer it chilled out and ambient sometimes, and other times raved up, but always electronic?

Whatever the answer, you are in luck this weekend with two of the concerts taking place in the Big Top in the Fisheries Field, as part of the Galway International Arts Festival.

County Down indie trio, Two Door Cinema Club, play on Friday at 7pm. The band have been going strong for more than a decade and last month saw the release of their new album False Alarm.

While recognisably TDCC, it also brought in new elements and saw the band being both familiar and somewhat different, as evidenced by the off-kilter modernist pop of 'Talk' and the mildly Krautrock ‘Satellite’. Indie-pop, New Romantic funk, moody Bowie-esque art-pop, and grandiose synth-pop are all present, along with socially conscious lyrics tackling climate change, social media, Brexit, and other man-made modern day horrors. Expect these, as well as the hits and fan favourites tomorrow night. Support is from All Tvvins.

Orbital, the dance/electro duo Q declared one of the ‘50 Bands to See Before You Die' in 2002, play the Big Top this Saturday from 8pm.

Paul and Phil Hartnoll recorded their 1989 single ‘Chime’ on their father’s tape recorder. It went on to become a rave anthem, and the brothers from Kent have been making waves on the techno scene ever since. The Guardian credited Orbital with ‘converting’ the 1994 Glastonbury Festival to dance music with a performance Q called one of the top 50 gigs of all time. Support is from the brilliant Irish electro producer and songwriter Daithí, and his live band
