NUI Galway students excel in sporting arenas

NUI Galway athletes enjoyed a successful week competing on international and national stages.

At the World University Games, six NUIG athletes competed in the women’s soccer, men’s soccer and archery in Naples, while there were six wins for the university's rowers at the national champs, and a personal best for sole U23 European athlete Sarah Quinn.

Aislinn Meaney, Elle O'Flaherty, Sadhbh Doyle and Shauna Fox finished fourth with the women’s soccer team at the university games, losing out on penalties 4-2 to Russia in the third place playoff. And Maurice Nugent started all but one game in a tough two weeks of competition in which the Irish men' side finished a respectable eighth, having lost out on penalties to a strong French side.

NUIG's Róisín Mooney made a significant name for herself within the archery world. The first Irish female to qualify for the games, she also secured an Irish record of 624 to secure her place at the games. Unfortunately Róisín met a stronger opponent in the knock-out stages to finish 33rd overall.

At the U23 European Athletics Championships Sarah Quinn managed a PB in both the heat and her semi-final of the 100 metre hurdles. A PB of 13.57 and a fourth place finish in her semi-final ensured Sarah finished 12th in the overall standings of the event. She also helped the Irish 100 metre relay team to the final at the championships where they finished in fourth place.

Back home NUI Galway students claimed six wins at the Irish Rowing Championships on Inniscarra Lake - all in the women's events, the club coxed four, senior coxless four, senior double sculls, senior coxless pair, intermediate eight and senior eight. In addition claimed seven second place finishes and one third place finish ensured a superb weekend for the college with every boat featuring on the podium!

This week also on the water in Poland, Eoin Moorhouse was competing at the U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Krakow.
