YEHUDA AMICHAI was probably Israel's greatest poet, and his poetry will be celebrated and read at the Over The Edge Writers’ Gathering in The Kitchen Café of the Galway City Museum next week.
Yehuda Amichai (1924-2000 ) was called "the most widely translated Hebrew poet since King David," by the translator Robert Alter. Speaking about his work to the Paris Review, Amichai argued that all his poetry was political: “This is because real poems deal with a human response to reality, and politics is part of reality, history in the making,” he said. “Even if a poet writes about sitting in a glass house drinking tea, it reflects politics.”
Reading Amichai's poems will be Yvonne Green, curator of the Yehuda Amichai International Poetry Festival; London-based Irish poet, Róisín Tierney; Scottish poet Morag Anderson; and Galway's Katherine Noone. Each poet will also read one of her own works.
The reading takes place on Thursday July 11 at 8pm. This is an Over The Edge and Yehuda Amichai International Poetry Festival collaboration. The MC will be Kevin Higgins, who will also read a poem by Amichai. Admission is free and all are welcome.
