City celebrates one hundred and twenty years of local democracy

Mayor of Galway City, Mike Cubbard, and Deputy Mayor, Donal Lyons, launched a visual exhibition celebrating 120 years of local democracy in Ireland on Tuesday.

The exhibition will be open to the public in City Hall, College Road, until July 8.

Speaking at the launch, Brendan McGrath, chief executive of the Galway City Council, said; “The first local election in Ireland was on April 6 1899, making 2019 the 120th anniversary of local elections and local democracy in Ireland. I am delighted Galway City Council will host this exhibition, which charts the evolution of local government in Ireland.”

The Celebrating the History of Irish Local Government exhibition will travel to local authorities across the country in 2019, and will be open to the public during opening hours (9am to 4pm ) in Galway City Council until July 8.
