Naughton welcomes ‘substantial’ funds for Corrib Mask Search and Rescue

Corrib Mask Search and Rescue is set to receive €42,000 for the replacement of its current rescue vessel on Lough Corrib with a new rigid inflatable boat, under the latest round of funding from the LEADER programme.

A further €12,400 will provided to train and upskill voluntary members of the organisation, under the programme, which supports rural development. FORUM Connemara will also receive €6,000 in funding for a Wild Atlantic Way training programme aimed at improving visitor experience, and sharing knowledge between operators in the tourism sector.

The funding has been welcomed by Galway West Fine Gael TD, Hildegarde Naughton, who said 31 projects in Galway West have now received a total of €686,829, while 10 more applications for an additional €938,171 are currently being assessed. In particular, she welcomed the “substantial allocation” for search-and-rescue services on Lough Corrib.

“We are constantly indebted to organisations like Corrib Mask Search and Rescue, who provide such an important service and sacrifice so much to save lives. It is good to be able to give something back in the form of funding,” she said. “The replacement RIB will ensure that they are properly equipped and can continue their exceptional work protecting people and preventing tragedy on Lough Corrib.”
