The system used to determine the patronage of new schools needs to be reviewed to ensure education through the Irish langauge is available to all, according to Aire don Ghaeilge, don Ghaeltacht agus do na hÓilean, Seán Kyne.
The Minister, and Fine Gael Galway West TD, was speaking at the official opening of the new school for Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh in Knocknacarra, Galway city, which is one of the largest gaelscoileanna in the State.
While he said the current system, had helped ensure “the voice of the parents and guardians” was at the centre of the patron selection process, the system “is not helping us to meet the desire for the establishment of Gaelscoileanna”. As a result, he is calling for it to be “reviewed and changed” so the option of education through Irish “is available to all communities”. He has also raised the issue with the Minister for Education, Joe McHugh.
“Irish language schools play an essential role in the future of the Irish language,” said Minister Kyne. “They inspire pupils and equip them with skills that are of benefit long after formal education. It is imperative that in our efforts to ensure our education system reflects and serves today’s Ireland, the option of education through Irish is available.”
