The 31st Galway Film Fleadh, in association with Gréasán na Meán Skillnet, are pleased to announce Allison Anders will be the subject of this year’s Writers Masterclass.
Kentucky-born LA-raised Allison Anders is an award-winning screenwriter and film and TV director whose work includes Border Radio, Gas Food Lodging, Mi Vida Loca, Grace Of My Heart, and Sugartown. She's directed episodes of Sex And The City, Orange Is The New Black, Southland, Riverdale, Murder In The First and recently Sorry For Your Loss. She was nominated for an Emmy for Best Director for the Lifetime movie Ring of Fire, wherein she cast John Doe as the Father of Country Music AP Carter. She's a MacArthur Fellow and won a Peabody Award for her film Things Behind the Sun and a Distinguished Professor of Film at USCB. She resides in Altadena, CA with Mattie her adorable dog who's a retired actress.
The masterclass will be moderated by Mary Kate O Flanagan who is an award-winning writer and story consultant working in the film and television industry. She works with writers in The UK, The US, South Africa, and across Europe. She has designed and delivered training in Storytelling On The Screen in Romania, The Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Malta, Norway, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, The UK and The US as well as in her native Ireland.
Mary Kate works as a credited co-writer or uncredited script doctor. With her sister Rachel O’Flanagan, she gives training in the storytelling skills for professionals in cinema and television. They are particularly interested in the stories individuals and organisations tell about themselves and how those stories inevitably shape their futures.
Mary Kate is Ireland’s First Grand Slam Champion Storyteller at The Moth, a title she won at The Abbey Theatre in October 2015. She is also a Grand Slam Champion Storyteller at The Moth in LA, a title she won in January 2017.
She won The Dublin StorySlam in January 2019 and will compete for the title of Grand Slam Champion again in November 2019. She is working on turning her stories into a piece of theatre.
Allison’s iconic film, Gas Food Lodging, will screen on Wednesday 10th July @ 8pm at Pálás as part of this year’s Galway Film Fleadh programme.
The masterclass costs €50 and will take place on Thursday 11th July from 10am – 1pm in the Galmont Hotel, Galway.
