‘It’s just that life has just felt so wobbly, so... even though I’ve lived here thirty years I feel...
dislocated... exiled, I suppose... and I’m not sure why... and maybe that’s the world, I
dunno…’
As a writer’s theatre company with a track record in premiering new plays of international stature, Druid is embarking on an exciting programme of new work in 2019, including the world premiere of Epiphany by Brooklyn-based writer Brian Watkins. Directed by Garry Hynes, this Druid production, in association with the Galway International Arts Festival (GIAF ), will premiere at the Town Hall Theatre during the festival in July.
Epiphany is set as snow falls softly on an uncanny evening. In an old city house, adrift in a modern world, a cheery host gathers a group of friends to try and reignite a forgotten tradition. But when the guest of honour, Gabriel, is unusually late, the participants find themselves unmoored and craving answers. And there just might not be enough wine or goose, or time, to fend off some long-neglected anxieties that haunt their souls.
‘This is a brave new ambitious play by a seriously talented writer’ said Garry Hynes, Artistic Director. ‘I am very excited to be working with an international company of actors led by Marie Mullen to bring this play to our audiences in Galway’ Druid is delighted to welcome international cast members Jude Akuwudike (UK ), Grace Byers, Bill Irwin and Julia McDermott (US ) who are making their Druid debuts and Kate Kennedy (UK ) fresh from her Furniture debut with the company, who join hugely celebrated Druid Ensemble members Aaron Monaghan, Marie Mullen, Rory Nolan and Marty Rea.
Epiphany will feature three Tony award winners – Garry Hynes (Director ), Marie Mullen and Bill Irwin.
Full credits and performance information below.
Epiphany continues a busy year for Druid following the hugely successful national tour of Druid’s smash hit Furniture by Sonya Kelly (a 2016 Druid Debut ) which played to new audiences of over 8,000 in 13 venues around the country; and recently announced for the autumn, the world premiere of The Beacon by Nancy Harris, a co-production with The Gate Theatre which will premiere in Galway and Dublin, followed by DruidShakespeare: Richard III at the Lincoln Centre’s White Light Festival in November.
As a vital part of Druid’s year of new writing in 2019, the company has selected three plays from over 200 scripts submitted for Druid Debuts, the company’s annual staged reading series at GIAF. Caoimhe, Carl, and the Great Tapir in the Sky by Sionnán Ní Nualláin, Shin-Aid by Eamann Breen and Narcissus by William Dunleavy all make their debut in The Mick Lally Theatre this summer as part of the festival.
Tickets for Epiphany and Druid Debuts are on sale and can be purchased via www.druid.ie, in person at the GIAF box Office The Cornstore (091 566 577 ) or at Pavilion Theatre 01 2312929. Tickets are limited so early booking is advised.
