MARJA VAN KAMPEN, the Dutch born artist, who lived in Galway for many years ands was a founder member of Artspace Studios, is currently displaying her new exhibition, Recollections in Harmony & Colour, in The Kenny Gallery.
The work in this exhibition was inspired by trips to India and the often tactile closeness of mothers and children there, as well as by the colour and black and white photographs her father took of her sisters and herself in the 1950s and 1960s. Incorporated in the works are elements of landscape (local, foreign, and imaginative ); decorative and fabric motifs; rich and vibrant colour; distorted proportions; and a deliberate disregard of perspective to produce a spirited and light-hearted quality.
.
Marja van Kampen was born in The Hague, Netherlands. She is a full time painter and printmaker. She now lives in Enniscorthy with her husband Dick Donaghue. Her work has appeared in numerous group exhibitions. She has exhibited her paintings in Ireland, Britain, France, and China. Four of her paintings are in Áras an Uachtaráin.
Recollections in Harmony & Colour runs at The Kenny Gallery, Liosbán Industrial Estate, until June 29. Admission is free. Gallery opening times are Mondays to Saturdays from 9am to 5pm.
