We needed to start conversation about environment yesterday, says Higgins

Local election candidate Clodagh Higgins said this week that we have a duty to hand our planet over to the next generation in a better condition than we found i, but that stating the obvious without concrete proposals only fills an echo chamber.

“My local election candidacy is about more than that. An environmentalist ever since I heard Julian Lennon’s “Saltwater” as a child I am focused on driving measures at Council level that will effect real and actual cultural change in Galway. I propose starting with council-led information evenings to empower Galwegians to drive the sustainability agenda and conserve our planet.

“But that’s not all. I have ideas about flood protection measures in Salthill, introducing public drinking water points which will help alleviate the scourge of plastic bottles. Encouraging people to plant and grow through the introduction of allotments,” she said.

“And let’s not stop there. Let’s be bold. Let’s be radical and let’s lead the charge in working to decarbonise our public transport system. Put sustainability at its heart and extend cycle paths and expand the city bike scheme to Salthill and Knocknacarra.

“Introduce a plastic bottle deposit return pilot initiative and explore the possibility of a hydro-electric pilot project on the River Corrib. As the fastest flowing river to run through any city in Europe let’s harness its power and energy to ‘light up our City’.

Vision with action can change the world. Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” she concluded.
