After months of planning the #MyFieldsofAthenry dream came to life in spectacular fashion on Monday.
The Amazing Apples and Matt Cunningham, The King of Ceili, led a crowd of nearly 5,000 in the world’s biggest street performance of ‘The Fields of Athenry’.
Seán Brett of Steeltech said the event was a great opportunity for people of Athenry and beyond to put their own unique mark to the song.
The square in Athenry was filled to capacity as the crowd took the opportunity to show the world how much this iconic song means to them.
Earlier in the morning more than 100 tin whistle players led a crowd of some 3,000 in the playing of the much loved ballad. The castle in Athenry providing a fitting backdrop as singers, young and old, smiled and sang in the May sunshine.
The launch date for the world’s biggest street performance of ‘The Fields of Athenry’ by Kamil Films is June 15.
