Fine Gael Councillor John Walsh has said he was delighted to see so many young families using the upgraded Lakeshore Drive playground over the Bank Holiday weekend. Almost three years ago Cllr. Walsh was approached by Renmore residents seeking an upgrade of the playground at Lakeshore Drive which had become almost unusable and unsafe.
“I canvassed the area on Saturday with Hildegarde Naughton T.D. and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the facilities there. At the time, I was advised by the City Parks Dept. that the required expenditure of €30,000 was unavailable due to financial constraints. I persisted with the matter and secured funding of €10,000 in each of the subsequent council budgets (Dec ‘17 & ‘18 ) to upgrade equipment at the park,” he said.
This phased approach has proven extremely beneficial to young families in the area. The facility has helped nurture a sense of community in the area, particularly amoungst the ever increasing number of young families now choosing to make their homes in Renmore”.
“One more piece of equipment is now required and the playground needs to be fenced to make it safe for younger children and I’m confident that the final €10,000 will be secured in this years budget”.
“The summertime is upon us and, weather permitting, families are spending a lot of time at playgrounds, in parks or at the beach. Safe and fun play areas are essential to and they are a wonderful facility for children and parents alike.
Every child needs access to modern, quality play areas which are inclusive, accessible and safe.
“Play areas must give a sense of adventure. At a time when outdoor activities are often overlooked for hi-tech games, we must ensure our play areas are exciting, innovative and engaging for young minds,” he concluded.
