Galway teams joined most of the country's top endurance athletes at the highly competitive National Road Relays Championships in Raheny, Dublin, on Sunday.
Galway City Harriers women's team of Kathryn Casserly, Aisling Joyce and Sinead Foran impressed with a sixth place overall, while the GCH senior men’s team placed a respectable 18th, with great runs from Aaron Brennan, Neall Keane, John Moroney, backed up by Brian Bruton.
Castlegar fielded five teams across the events. The women's over 35 team placing a fine 15th, and the senior women finished 18th overall, led off with a fast leg from Aoife Fallon. Castlegar’s Masters men’s squad field two teams at O35 level, placing 17th and 27th, while the O50 men’s team placed a solid eighth, led by Ian Egan.
Track and field
The County Galway Juvenile Outdoor Track and Field championships commence this weekend. Sunday’s programme features the U9 to 11 pairs competition and U12 individual competition. Day two on May 12 features the older ages from U13 to U19 age groups. Both days will be held in Dangan at the Regional Sports Centre.
The junior, senior and masters track and field events will follow the successful format of other years, with three evenings of competition in Dangan, on Thursday evenings, starting on May 23, and continuing on May 30 and June 6.
Registration is open via club secretaries for the Juvenile programmes at present.
Windsor Galway 5k
The 2019 Galway 5k series kicked off yesterday in Caltra. The sell-out series, with Windsor Motors and the HSE on board as sponsors this year, features six races and some 1,000 runners taking to the roads in Galway, including Craughwell, Loughrea, Athenry, Tuam, and Clarenbridge over the next five Tuesdays
National 5km championships: The inaugural National 5km road race championships take place on Sunday in Dublin's Phoenix Park at 11am.
Irish Milers Club: The first Irish Milers Club event of the season takes place on Saturday in Greystones, Co Wicklow, and is an event where many of Galway’s track runners at junior and senior level open their season in a series of paced races
Limerick Marathon: Sunday sees the annual Limerick six mile, half and full marathons take place with Galway’s top distance runners competing. Elaine Walsh and Neasa De Burca of GCH will target a top 10 finish and will be chasing the three-hour barrier, while Tara Whyte and Sinead Foran also GCH are among the contenders for honours in the half marathon.
