A newly formed group is hoping to restore the Corrib and waterways to their "former glory".
The Corrib Beo Catchment Partnership will be launched at a Corrib Waterways Conference at the Commercial Boat Club on Steamers Quay, Galway on May 2.
This is a coalition of Corrib activists and interest groups from the different related areas of business, community, education, environment, fishing, recreation, tourism, and others.
The conference will mark the launch of a campaign to build a broad-based alliance and action plan for the new Corrib vision.
Its objective is the creation and realisation of the new shared vision for the Corrib that will overcome the modern challenges faced by the waterway, and the contribution it can make to the health and wellbeing of local communities, the lakeside economy, and to create a cleaner environment for all.
This strategic plan would lead to greater efficiencies of effort, and have a major positive impact on waterways’ remediation and the restoration to their former glory of the lake, its landscapes, rivers and canals.
The timing of this new initiative to address these challenges, however, has never been more favourable in terms of the supports available at European, national and local level. The care, protection, and sustainable development of the Corrib challenges are a microcosm of the greater humanitarian and environmental challenges of our age.
The conference will be chaired by Dr Micheál Ó Cinnéide, an ex-director of the environmental protection agency, and it will also include veteran environmental campaigners, Duncan Stewart and Brendan Smith, as well as representatives from the many different groups already involved and committed to the protection and development of the Corrib Waterways.
