A community was in mourning this week following the tragic death of an 11-year-old girl in a road traffic accident on Easter Sunday.
Bridget Ward was struck by a car before noon while cycling on the Ballinasloe to Ahascragh Road. Her younger brother Paddy (7 ), who was with her at the time, sustained serious injuries in the incident. He was rushed to Portiuncula Hospital. The children, who are from Ballygar, were understood to be visiting their grandparents in Ahascragh for the Easter break when the collision occurred.
Tributes poured in this week for the talented little girl who was described in online tributes as an "angel" and a "princess" and who was known for her kindness. She was a pupil at Eglish Primary School in Ahascragh, Ballinasloe. Its online tribute described the deep sadness that enveloped the school community on learning of the tragic loss of Bridget and said she was a kind, talented and wonderful girl who would always hold a special place in their hearts.
Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East and Children and Youth Affairs spokesperson Anne Rabbitte this week extended her sympathies to the Ward family.
She said it was "a tragic and numbing incident" for the family and the local community. "On a beautiful Easter Sunday this family's lives have been changed forever.
"It is an unimaginable, harrowing experience and I extend my deepest sympathies to them. My thoughts and prayers are with the family this week and the time ahead," concluded Deputy Rabbitte.
Local Fine Gael councillor Michael Finnerty assured the Ward family of the local community's support. He said everyone's thoughts were with the family at this difficult time.
