FOLLOWING HIS triumphant and powerful concert at Leisureland last Saturday, John Grant has made good on the promise he made to the audience that night when he said he would "see you sooner rather than later".
John Grant will play the Galway International Arts Festival Heineken Big Top on Thursday July 18, in a double bill with Villagers. Tickets are €39.50 and go on sale Thursday April 4 at 9am.
Grant's music, which mixes full-blooded electronica and 1970s style singer-songwriter soft-rock is emotionally powerful, raw, honest, and often caustically funny, as heard on such albums as Queen Of Denmark, Grey Tickles Black Pressure, and last year's Love Is Magic. As a live performer, there are currently few better at work today, with the intensity of his music, and his stage performances, mixing humour with catharsis, leaving audiences regularly awe-struck.
Villagers - centred on singer-songwriter Conor O'Brien - are arguably one of the best, and most popular bands in Ireland. O'Brien's thoughtful, intelligent lyrics, and the restless spirit of adventure that underlines his music, has produced such diverse albums as his debut, Becoming A Jackal, and his most recent, The Art Of Learning To Swim. As The Irish Times said: "Villagers generate the type of music (sparse, eerie, casually dishevelled, tangibly cool ) that will spread beyond the confines of niche appreciation into a great blue yonder."
