NUIG to stage world premiere of Spring Awakening

A newly devised adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s classic 19th century coming-of-age play

THIRD YEAR drama and theatre studies students at NUI Galway, will perform the world premiere of a newly devised adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s classic 19th century coming-of-age play, Spring Awakening.

Transitions: A Spring Awakening, will be performed at NUI Galway’s O’Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance today, tomorrow, and Saturday at 8pm, and on Sunday at 2pm. It is devised entirely by the students, and directed by Dr Charlotte McIvorm with movement direction by Jérèmie Cyr-Cooke.

Initially banned from the stage and censored throughout the 20th century in Europe and North America, Spring Awakening is a frank and haunting treatment of adolescent sexuality, depression, suicide, and academic pressure. This production sets the action of the play in Ireland, and centres on friends Dougie (Daniel Granahan ), Alex (Conor Gormley ), and Clara (Aine Cooney ), and their attempts to navigate the challenging circumstances they find themselves in, leading to individual and collective tragedy.

Tickets are €5 from www.eventbrite.ie There will be a post-show discussion with members of the ensemble this evening, following the 8pm performance.
