JACK O'ROURKE seems on the crest of a wave at the moment, especially as his latest single, 'Ivory Towers', released via Reckless Records, has been going down well these last few weeks.
The song, which Hotpress has called "an alt-pop tour de force" and "further evidence of O'Rourke's remarkable versatility as a musical chameleon", is also the title track of his new EP, which has just been released. He wil play songs from that EP, as well as from his album Dreamcatcher, at the Róisín Dubh on Saturday March 23 at 8pm.
The EP also includes the hit single, 'Myth', with its folky, swirling, strings; the trip hop beats and Afro-pop of 'Moody Broody', 'Snowglobe', a co-write with Marlene Enright, and 'Showwomanship' with its traces of Talking Heads and ABBA. Tony Clayton Lea in The Irish Times called O'Rourke a "seriously good songwriter”, while Fiachna Ó Braonáin has praised his "beautiful honest songwriting".
O'Rourke has performed with Glen Hansard, Imelda May, Bell X1, and Declan O’Rourke. His single ‘Silence’ was chosen as the anthem for the Yes Equality Campaign in 2015. It also won first place prize in the International Songwriting Competition, judged by Tom Waits and Bill Withers.
