Medal haul for NUIG athletes at championships

NUIG Athletics Club enjoyed a successful Irish University Indoor Championships with a substantial medal haul, including three golds, two silvers and two bronze medals.

Gold came via the talented NUIG women's relay team in Athlone IT Arena on Friday when they raced home in the 4x200m event in a time of 101.69 seconds, an NUIG Record. The squad comprised Sarah Quinn, Ciara Barry, Ellie O'Toole and Nicole Walsh. International athlete Damien Landers won the 3000m with a great final lap, and Eoghan Rodgers secured victory in the weight for distance throw to claim the third gold of the day for NUIG.

Sarah Quinn also won two individual medals, with a silver medal win in the 60m sprint, clocking 7.48 seconds, and she then claimed bronze in the 60m hurdles in 8.6 seconds, both personal bests and NUIG records.

Nicole Walsh won a superb silver medal over 400m, continuing her great start to the season, while also on the track, Shane Mooney won bronze in the men’s 60m hurdles. Thrower Bridget Mc Dyer won bronze in the weight for distance event to cap a great day for the college.

NUIG women's team won bronze overall, while the men’s squad was fifth.

Galway athletes also impressed competing with other colleges - Alanna Lally won 1500m silver for UCD, Cillin Greene took 200m silver for DCU, while Brendan Lynch won bronze in the triple jump competing for University of Limerick.

Gort 5km

Local athlete David Richardson of South Galway AC won the annual Gort 8k, organised by local club South Galway AC, on Sunday, clocking 16.59 for victory. He finished ahead of Brian Murphy of Ennis Track and Greg Lyndon also South Galway. First woman home was Tara Whyte of GCH in 19.49 with clubmate Sinead Foran second, and Alma Hanevy third.
