An East Galway TD is urging the region’s community groups to apply to the Heritage Council`s ‘Adopt a Monument’ scheme.

Minister for the Diaspora and International Development Ciaran Cannon has said that the scheme can help preserve local monuments while also boosting local tourism, business and employment opportunities.

Minister Cannon said he is delighted to see that Woodville Walled Garden in Kilchreest is hosting its annual Snowdrop event this coming Saturday (February 9 ) ) which will include a guided tour of the snowdrop collection at the Garden’.

“This is a beautifully restored venue which is an important part of South Galway’s heritage and the restoration included the reconstruction of an archway with a keystone dating from 1750.

“With our local heritage in mind, I wish to draw the attention of community groups in the region to the Heritage Council`s ‘Adopt a Monument’ Scheme which offers interested groups a way of promoting pride in local monuments,” he said.

From mentoring and training to assistance with funding applications and community events, the Heritage Council works in partnership to help to develop a deeper understanding of the monument and its place in the landscape and the team work with the communities to create and implement bespoke plans for each monument.

He added that this scheme is one very good means of helping community groups embrace their heritage and covers monuments as varied as prehistoric tombs, stone circles, medieval town walls, castles, churches, bridges, graveyards, landed estates, mines, kilns, mills, traditional houses or battlefields’.

Minister Cannon said that applications are due by February 28.
