Mayor calls for Highfield Park footpaths to be repaired

'The paths have been dug up after various works and is well and truly worn and damaged'

Footpaths in Highfield Park are in urgent need of repair and the Galway City Council must ensure that repair work is done alongside the work Irish Water is currently carrying out in the neighbourhood.

This is the view of the Mayor of Galway, Labour city councillor Niall McNelis, who said the issue of the poor conditions of the Highfield Park paths has been a persistent problem. Irish Water is currently carrying out maintenance and repair works in the area. It is understood the works will run for 16 weeks, from 8am to 6pm.

The Mayor has written to Ruth McNally, the council's director of services for transportation, planning, and physical development directorate, asking for footpath repairs to be carried out in tandem with the works being carried out by Irish Water. "It is important that every effort is done to minimise costs and use opportunities like these to be used as solutions," he wrote.

In his letter to Ms McNally, he said: "Over the years, the paths have been dug up after various works with broadband, ESB, telecoms, water and other services. It had also in the past had tar sprayed on a surface which is now well and truly worn and damaged. This is an area with many elderly living in it and is very much an owner occupied estate."
