Bye-laws adopted by the Galway County Council this week, and which come into effect on Friday March 1, will see 80kmph speed limits on some roads reduced to 60kmph.
The bye-laws, which were adopted on Monday, have been welcomed by Independent Oranmore-Athenry councillor Jim Cuddy, who has been campaigning for such changes, particularly on those roads prone to ‘rat running’ during peak times.
The changes apply only to regional and local roads throughout the county. The speed limits on the national primary and national secondary roads are the responsibility of TII and are not affected by the new council limits. Cllr Cuddy says he will “be monitoring the situation closely with the hope that motorists will obey these new speed limits”.
